Abraham "Bram" Stoker (November 8, 1847 – April 20, 1912) was an Irish novelist and short story writer, best known today for his 1897 Gothic novel Dracula. During his lifetime, he was better known as personal assistant of actor Henry Irving and business manager of the Lyceum Theatre in London, which Irving owned.

Inspired by Carmilla, the 19th Century vampire tale by Sheridan LeFanu. In 1989, Lara, a young girl expelled from an English boarding school for injuring a classmate, travels with her father, an art historian in Communist Hungary, to the small town of Styria. Their destination is the Castle von Karnstein, now nearly a ruin. But a car accident thrusts the beautiful and enigmatic Carmilla into Lara life.
